It is a rare (and perhaps nonexistent) student who never comes unprepared to a music lesson. Summer is especially hard, with camps, vacations, sports activities, and freedom from structure. As both a parent and a music teacher, I have found it a challenge to create incentives that inspire a young person to practice in the summer.
Scheduled Practice Time. One of the biggest obstacles to summer practice may be the lack of structure. Families, out of necessity, schedule their days very carefully during the school year. But summertime is much freer. A set practice time is the first step in ensuring that your children are ready for their lessons. Whether it’s in the morning before they run out to play, or in the evening when they are home for the day and winding down for bed, choose a time that works best for your family and stick to it.
