Has anyone else noticed how much teenagers hate to work? Yeah, I’m sure you haven’t.
I get tired of hearing about only wanting to work if a certain type of job can be found. Have you ever heard anything like:
“I WON’T work in fast food.”
“I only will work in a clothing store, because I want the discount on clothing.”
“That job is so boring, I can’t stand it.”
Well, people, you have to start somewhere. Get a job wherever you can, do your very best, and don’t complain. You will move forward as you go.
Our relationship as humans with the work that we do has been on my mind a lot lately. I have tried really hard not to raise entitled kids, but they still don’t seem to understand that work is not all fun and games. I hope that all of my children find employment in something that is satisfying and fulfilling to them, but if not, that they will accept that they still need to work.
I was lucky enough to land in a profession that I LOVE. There are three things that I am particularly passionate about: kids, music, and teaching. How amazing that I get to combine those three passions into a career! But, even as much as I love it, days come when it is all I can do to trudge through an afternoon of lessons. Sometimes it is boring. Sometimes I have a student that I would rather refuse to teach, for whatever reason. Sometimes I don’t get any perks that I think I should deserve by being a music teacher. But when I step back and look at the picture as a whole, I find that teaching piano lessons brings me indescribable joy and satisfaction. I love the time I spend with the students. I love watching them progress. I love preparing lessons and curriculum. I love hearing them express joy through their music.
It’s worth the boring days.
