I once had a student named Lizzy. She was 16: talented, mature, vibrant, happy, and a whirlwind of a person. I loved her. She was a burst of energy every time she walked into a room. My son, who was good friends with her, told me once that she doesn’t like roller coasters, haunted houses, or anything else that gives her a rush of adrenaline. It seemed incongruous to me because Lizzy IS a rush of adrenaline.

Lizzy didn’t take lessons for very long. She was too involved with high school choirs and musical productions, her own few beginning students, school, work, and an active social life. But her personality resonated with mine. I am not a physically energetic person, but I am passionate about the things that I love. I can play music softly and sweetly but I much prefer big, loud, and fast.

And this is exactly how I see life: exciting, vibrant, and full of energy.  The lessons I learn from teaching, playing, and learning music apply to all aspects of life. Just think: if we could live each moment of our lives as passionately and vibrantly as Lizzy, how much would our days improve?
