People who have the ability to relieve stress through musical or artistic self-expression are prepared to face a very challenging world. With increased self-control and esteem learned through studying the arts, they can overcome shyness and enter social situations with greater ease. People who have learned through studying the arts to take abstract symbols and translate them into a meaningful experience can solve problems creatively and often more effectively than those who have not received training in the arts. Accustomed to reaching for excellence in artistic expression, they will not settle for mediocrity in other areas of their lives.

In short, “the arts are worth studying simply because of what they are. Their impact cannot be denied. Throughout history, all the arts have served to connect our imaginations with the deepest questions of human existence: Who am I? What must I do? Where am I going?” (Kent Seidel, PhD, Association for the Advancement of Arts Education, 1996). Most teachers do not expect their students to become world-famous musicians or artists. But if we can reach a soul and better prepare a child for a successful life, our mission will be accomplished.
